Born in Argentina, Ernesto Rafael Guevara de la Serna is known for the part he has played in Castro’s Cuban Revolution. As a young man, he studied medicine and travelled throughout South America. The experiences and observations gathered in the early 50s convinced him that if socio-economic inequalities were to subside, only a revolution could bring change about. He then gets involved in Guatemala’s social reforms led by President Guzmán who just a few was months later was overthrown in a coup d’etat organised by the CIA. Che Guevara then joins the 26th of July revolutionary movement headed by Fidel Castro. After two years in the guerrilla, Guevara rises to commanding officer and in 1959 the group seizes power in Cuba from Fulgencio Batista’s dictatorial regime. After exposing how the then two super powers both exploited third world countries, Guevara leaves Cuba in 1965 to incite revolutions first in a failed attempt in Congo-Leopoldville and finally in Bolivia where he is captured and executed by the CIA trained and supervised army. Che Guevara remained an icon of socialist revolutionary movements world-wide and his story bears controversies for his role of supreme prosecutor overseeing Cuban revolutionary tribunals and executions of suspected war criminals associated with the previous regime.
